shouji

Shouji (障子) are a door, window, or room divider consisting of translucent paper over a frame of wood which holds together a lattice of wood or bamboo. Shouji are made of traditional thin, white rice paper called washi. You can't see through the rice paper, but it is thin enough to let light through. Because the paper used is so thin, shouji have delicate wooden frames with wooden pieces every 5 to 10 centimeters apart which create a grid pattern on the panel.
